The Stories…Shedding Light on Sovereign Grace’s Abuses

I’ve had a huge uptick from folks searching for more information about Sovereign Grace Ministries and the lawsuit filed against current and former pastors (including CJ Mahaney and Larry Tomczak).  The lawsuit alleges that sexual abuse of children was covered up and not properly reported to the police and to the churches.  Many that read here are very familiar with the alleged abuses and the years of stories of heavy handed abuse and deception by SGM leaders.

To an outsider, who might only know of CJ Mahaney and Josh Harris as Christian authors/speakers, it can be intimidating to understand the unique culture and abuses that have occurred over the decades.  I would like to recommend a  link that may help you understand the types of abuses that have occurred and why SGM is now being sued.

Kris, over at SGM Survivors, has a  link called The Stories.  It is a huge compilation of stories from past members of Sovereign Grace and the abuses they endured.  The document is equivalent to a 140 page PDF file and has years of posts from former pastors, small group leaders, worship leaders, average church goers, and children that grew up within the Sovereign Grace family of churches.

This link alone should give anyone a pretty good idea of just how deep and wide the problems of abuse have dogged Sovereign Grace, because of their cultic view of pastoral authority.

As a side note, I wrote 3 posts for SGM Survivors back in 2008.  They are included in this link under Musicman’s story.  Musicman is the handle I’ve used at SGM Survivors since I began posting back in the fall of 2007.

I actually hadn’t read the posts I had written in a couple of years and will post them here at the Christian Agnostic over the next few days.  It may be of interest to some of my readers, since these posts were written a few years before losing my Christian faith.

Regardless, it is the true story of the abuses I saw and endured during my time in SGM.

Until next time….

Lawsuit Against Sovereign Grace Hits The Web: CJ Mahaney & Larry Tomczak Among Defendants

18 Oct

The lawsuit alleging cover ups of sexual abuse and pedophilia at two different Sovereign Grace Churches is now on-line.

Kris over at SGM Survivors has posted the document in it’s entirety.  You can view the document here.  In an interesting twist, both CJ Mahaney and Larry Tomczak are listed as defendants.   Both men were founders and leaders of SGM until Larry was forced to step down in the late 90’s.

As I get time, I’ll be posting more thoughts on the specifics of the case.

Until then…

Sovereign Grace Ministries Sued Over Alleged Sex Abuse Cases

17 Oct

It seems that this has been a long time coming for CJ Mahaney and the Board of Sovereign Grace Ministries.  The Washington Post is reporting that three different victims are suing SGM for their mishandling and concealment of sex abuse that occurred within their churches.  Over a half-dozen defendants are named in the case, but neither SGM nor any of the defendants made any comment when contacted concerning the case being brought against them.

While this is not the first time sex abuse cases have been brought to light concerning SGM , it is the first time that a lawsuit has been filed against SGM  for failing to report the crimes.

You can read the full Washington Post article here.

Dating the New Testament Writings

10 Oct

I may not be dating the church anymore (wink at Josh Harris), but I have continued my study on the New Testament and the historical dating of when the Scriptures were written.

I just came across a fascinating video series,by Xorosater, that attempts to answer when the New Testament Scriptures were written.  I like the series because the video clips are short, but very helpful in illustrating the difficulties of finding consistent evidence that the New Testament writings we have today are actually from the first century.

When I first started reading writings from the early church (over 12 years ago), I was fascinated by the diversity and a little unsettled at how much they actually muddled the water about the authority of the Bible and which books should be considered scripture and which ones should not.

If this is a topic that interests you, check it out and let me know what you think.  I still am a huge geek about the history of the early church and love the complexity and implications of this time period.

Why Evolution Is True

by Greg Mayer

A number of readers have wondered what Georgia congressman Paul Broun has against embryology; it was number two in his hit list of hellish lies (evolution and the big bang being one and three, respectively). The answer, of course, is that Broun must be a proponent of scientific storkism, another major scientific theory that is being suppressed by the academic elite. Tom Tomorrow blew the lid off the story several years ago.

Young Life Watch

In early September, Jonathan King Meyer, was sentenced to 6 to 20 years for sexually assaulting three teens he met through his work as a volunteer Young Life leader.

The assaults occurred in the summer of 2006, as Mr. Meyer befriended the three boys during his time as a Young Life leader.  He was their leader to Young Life’s Timberwolf Lake property in summer 2006 and also served as a lunch supervisor in their school.

This criminal conviction, again shows the vulnerabilities of this type of ministry model.

The only official response I could find from Young Life was a brief statement by Terry Swenson, expressing sadness and cooperation with the investigation.  What I have yet to see, is any real soul-searching on how to help prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.

You can watch a local news report about this case here.  Other news reports can be found here and here
